In the previous blog, we briefly explained what a Southern Wedding is but this time we want to go a little more into detail.
After the big question has been asked, and the answer was ‘yes’, the wedding planning begins. The groom will ask a special person to be his best man at the wedding and form a wedding party, and the bride will find here the maid of honour and the rest of her bridesmaids. In American weddings, during the ceremony, you will often see a “wedding party” consisting of bridesmaids and groomsmen that will be on each side of the bride and groom during the wedding ceremony. These people are often family and closest friends. The history behind this tradition comes from very long ago. The groomsmen were originally there to help ensure the bride’s safety during the wedding and keep away other potential suitors until the ceremony was completed. This is also why the groom and groomsmen stand to the right of the bride, to this side it would be easier to reach for their swords if any fighting was necessary. The bridesmaid, on the other hand, is one of the oldest traditions and began in biblical times. Women had other females stand with them, noting the wedding of Jacob to Leah and Rachel, where there were “literally the bride’s maids” in attendance.
Nowadays, the bridal party has slightly different tasks and we’d hope definitely no drawn swords or fighting! Before the wedding, the maid of honour and the best man will each plan a bachelorette and bachelor party for the bride and groom to celebrate their “last night of freedom” before they tie the knot with one another. The bridal party is the bride and groom’s most trusted friends and family, and are there to help guide them through the planning of the wedding and overcome any second thoughts or “cold feet”.
Another tradition for the bride and groom before the big day is to ‘bury the bourbon’. As the folklore goes, the key to a rain-free wedding day lies in this well-placed bottle of spirits. The bride and groom must bury a full bottle of bourbon upside down at the ceremony site exactly one month prior to the wedding to keep the rain away. This tradition is still celebrated in the southern wedding.
The Big Day
Like everywhere else in the US, the Southern Wedding begins with the wedding ceremony where the newly-weds share their first kiss as a married couple. This can either be in a church or outside, but what is very common at all southern weddings, is the rural vibe. At many southern weddings, you will experience a lot of nature, flowers and lace.
After the ceremony, it is tradition to form a ‘second line’ made up of the bride and groom, the wedding party and the wedding guest parading from the ceremony to the wedding reception celebrating the ‘I Do’s’.
The reception will usually be a beautiful setting, inside or outside, where everyone will enjoy a beautiful meal together. Family and friends will give speeches, sharing their love for the new couple and their newfound happiness.
Later that night, there will usually be a party where you can experience, the father-daughter dance, a special moment between the father and the bride, or the newly-weds’ first dance. You can also experience the ‘tossing of the bridal bouquet’ where all the single ladies gather behind the bride. The person to catch the bouquet will, after tradition, be the next to get married.
The Southern Wedding Cake
First and foremost, the Southern Wedding Cake must be white. Today’s wedding cakes can be whatever colour the couple desires, but during Victorian times, the sugar used to make the icing was white hence the white cake, and the tradition goes on in the traditional southern wedding cake.
Every person in New Orleans will know the flavours of the traditional southern wedding cake, and this is still a common flavour in many weddings today. A white, almond-flavoured confection with a beautiful filling and white icing.
Before anyone gets to taste the beautiful wedding cake, it’s a tradition that the bride and groom must cut the first piece together. Following this moment, you’ll experience that many couples will be feeding each other the first bite of wedding cake. Everybody has their own take on this tradition, but many couples use this moment to be a little playful and silly with each other.
Lastly, we have the cake pull. If you are ready to foretell the future of your bridesmaids, cake pulls will do the trick. The ribbon laden charms are placed in the wedding cake for each member of the bridal party to pull out. Each charm has a separate meaning and is believed to reveal the fate for each member of the bridesmaids.
- Ring: Soon to be Engaged
- Airplane: Exotic Travel is in the Near Future
- Highchair: Blessed with Children
- Four Leaf Clover: Always Lucky
- Owl: Full of Wisdom and Intuition
- Rocker: Blessed with a Long Life
- Heart: Lucky in Love
- Ballet Shoes: Dances Through Life
- Tiara: Forever the Princess
This is of course not all the traditions that exist. The traditions also vary from wedding to wedding as not everybody wants the exact same wedding or value traditions equally, but hopefully this gives you an idea of some of the different fun and quirky traditions you can experience at a southern wedding.
This month, PJ’s Coffee is excited to announce that we are going to kick-off the wedding season with the emotional taste of Southern Wedding Cake. We want to celebrate love, traditions, the sound of smooth jazz and enjoy the delicious flavours of Southern Wedding Cake! We want to create a warm and welcoming environment, where everyone can be themselves, have a good time with friends and family, bonding over a heart-warming cup of PJ’s Southern Wedding Cake Coffee and piece of cake or pastry that will touch your soul. We might not geographically be in the beautiful city of New Orleans but we will bring you some of the New Orleans experience. New Orleans, is where PJ’s Coffee has its roots and it’s the home of Mardi Gras, smooth jazz and many more traditions, that we want to share with you.
Treat someone you love with a cup of coffee and a piece of cake, and remind them how important they are to you because that is what the Southern Wedding is all about – spreading love.
What is a Southern Wedding?
That’s a great question!
All around the world people are celebrating love. The love you have for your family, your friends, our planet and much more, and not to forget, the love between two people. When you find that one person you want to spend the rest of your life with – your partner in crime, the Bonnie to your Clyde or the PJ’s Coffee to your cake. Weddings are celebrated differently all around the world as every culture has its own tradition, and everybody enjoys a wedding celebration.
You might assume that all weddings in the US are celebrated the same way as it’s one country. Yes, you are right, and the overall wedding concept is the same. However, its size, the many different states with their own history, result in multiple different wedding themes and traditions and the Southern Wedding is one of them.
The American wedding is a gathering of friends and family to celebrate the love between two people – the bride and groom. After the wedding ceremony, there will be a reception where everyone shares love, fun, food, and most importantly, wedding cake! And this is where we get our Southern Wedding Cake flavour inspiration, the taste of almond and vanilla. The wedding cake is the centre of attention in a Southern Wedding, besides the bride and groom obviously. So, hurry up and visit PJ’s Coffee for a taste of this beautiful tradition!
At PJ’s Coffee we’re excited to announce that on October 19th, we launch new drinks that combine the smooth and round flavours of PJ’s Coffee with the beautiful flavours of the Southern Wedding Cake. It’s going to be an adventure for your taste buds. You can experience a cup of coffee in New Orleans surroundings that will give you the taste of coffee that you love and let you experience the smooth taste of almonds with the sweet and creamy whipped cream on top. Whether you like your coffee hot or cold, we have one for you!

On October 19th, to celebrate the Southern Wedding and the traditions and values that come with it, we’re going to have an event at PJ’s Coffee Sala where you can taste PJ’s Coffee’s Southern Wedding Cake Coffee, enjoy a piece of actual wedding cake, and enjoy the various activities we have planned for you.

Once again TRG attended this year’s BBGV Fun Run to help give a little back to its community, this year with PJ’s Coffee refreshing attendees with free coffee and Lemonade.
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam – 30 September 2019 – Since 2000 BBGV has held an annual charity fun run that brings people out into the fresh air to have fun and exercise, while raising money for charity. Every year TRG joins the fun run to help give back to the community and give its employees an opportunity to relax and have fun with co-workers and family, while helping a good cause.
This year was no different. In the early hours of a beautiful Sunday morning over 20 employees from TRG, along with family and friends, joined together at the BBGV Charity Fun Run 19th to enjoy a fun morning together filled with exercise, good company, and the many amazing booths and activities at the event. Just from the employees that showed up for the event, TRG raised over 4,000,000 VND for charity, no counting the personal contributions from employees to the event.
However, TRG were not the only ones who joined the fun run this year. PJ’s Coffee, which is a part of TRG F&B, were also there and because they just joined the ranks of In-kind Gold sponsors for the event, decided to celebrate by refreshing attendees with free coffee, tea and lemonade the entire morning. Over 1,200 cups of coffee and lemonade was served during the event by the amazing barista from PJ’s Coffee.
This event is first and foremost an opportunity to have fun with friends and family and the employees at TRG certainly took that to heart. At the event, the Founder and CEO, Mr. Rick Yvanovich, along with two employees were dressed as mascots for PJ’s Coffee and ran the 5km course as giant cups of coffee, taking pictures with kids and adults alike along the way.
TRG and PJ’s Coffee expect to be back at the BBGV Fun Run next year to continue their contributions to charity and enjoy another great day together in the fresh air.

On June 3, PJ’s Coffee Vietnam had the opportunity to participate in the “Go-green Day” event organized by the Ho Chi Minh Department of Natural Resources and Environment. The event attracted many local Saigonese participants, particularly the younger generation, because of its meaningful message: “Let’s build a green life”.
Joining the event with high expectations, PJ’s Coffee Vietnam wants to further raise the general public awareness with our own message “Change for sustainable living”. Many activities were organized at PJ’s booth to:
– Propagate the message of “Change for sustainable living”; encourage every visitor to “say no to plastic straws” and to “reduce the use of plastic items”.
– Introduce and sell reusable tumblers which help protect the environment.
– Give out tea and coffee samples.
PJ’s Coffee Vietnam hope to have inspired the go-green attitude to many customers. We were extremely delighted when people joined hands with PJ’s to spread this attitude to more people through photos with hashtags on their social network channels. Let’s “change for sustainable living” together for a better future!

PJ’s Coffee Sala is proud to coordinate with TRG International and SEA Management Consulting Company to host the event: TRG Talk: Project Management with IPMAV
Project Management is all around us and is part and parcel of normal working life. Getting things done: at the right time, in the right place, to the right quality, on schedule and preferably under budget. It should be doable but these days given less time and resources it’s getting more and more challenging.
If everyone had some strong Project Management skills and mindset, maybe things would be a lot less challenging.
To address the above and much more, the International Project Management Association of Vietnam (IPMAV) is in the process of being born. IPMAV’s Vision is to be the premier Project Management organisation in Vietnam. IPMAV’s Mission is to promote the recognition of project management and engage stakeholders around Vietnam in advancing the discipline
To help grow the Project Management community we are holding a regular informal meetup every First Thursday at PJ’s Coffee in Sala. These events will discuss about Project Management and provide an opportunity for attendees to discuss specific issues and challenges they have with experienced Projects Managers in Vietnam.
The first event will be Thursday 4 May
